Becoming a KonMari Consultant, Again

Re-Becoming a KonMari Consultant
My Journey Back (2024)
I first discovered Marie Kondo in 2017, and was immediately drawn to the idea of surrounding myself only with things that are joyful or useful to the life I wanted to live.
That pull was strong enough that I became a certified KonMari Consultant in 2018, launching a business soon after.
In 2020, during the pandemic, I closed that chapter to focus on a full-time role in global-health focused geospatial analysis.
And yet—the truth was, I missed tidying.
While I loved the creative, technical, meaningful nature of my work, I found myself longing for something more immediate: to see, firsthand, the impact of my efforts on other people’s lives.
So in the spring of 2024, I reached back out to the KonMari team to begin the process again.

(Re)Certification as a KonMari Consultant
During my application call with KonMari Media, I learned a few key things:
My certification had lapsed and would require full re-certification
The training had moved online during the pandemic
The first in-person training was returning that fall—in London
My interviewer mentioned the course was nearly full and joked that it was too bad I wouldn’t be in the UK.
I remember laughing as I realized—I actually would be.
By complete coincidence (or perhaps something a bit more serendipitous), I had already planned to be in the UK during that exact window, staying with friends between two international global health conferences.
I signed up immediately—and similar to my first time around the KonMari Consultant Merry-Go-Round, I secured one of the final remaining spots for the training.
London, Mary Poppins, and a Full-Circle Moment
I was beyond excited to attend the training in London—a city I’ve always felt drawn to.
As a lifelong lover of fairytales and Disney, I couldn’t help but see echoes of Mary Poppins, my ultimate favorite heroine, woven throughout the city.
My friend and UK host joined me for my journey to London, and we saw Six: The Musical—a vibrant, modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s wives. After the show, she made me promise to do some “practice tidying” once I got home, before heading off—while I made my way to the Tube and on to my hotel.
The Training Experience
Marie Kondo and Jessica White, 2024
On the first morning, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the air. Attendees had traveled from around the world, all gathering at ExCeL London—a vast exhibition center that felt like a city unto itself and overlooked the Docklands.
Having attended the training years earlier—before Marie Kondo’s Netflix series turned her name into a verb—it was striking to see how much the program had evolved.
Everything felt more refined:
The agenda was clearer
The materials more robust
The structure more accessible
And Marie herself had evolved as well—grounded, confident, and speaking in English without a translator. I felt impressed and grateful to be in her orbit.
The course was immersive, intensive, and filled with kind, thoughtful people. We focused on the philosophy and mindset of the KonMari Method®, explored how to guide clients through their tidy journeys, and learned how to build a business grounded in service and intention.
Marie delivered a keynote at the beginning of the training, and returned at the end to sign books and take photos.
A World of Possibility
Henry, the vacuum (or hoover) mascot
Running alongside the training was the Home & Tidy Show, now rebranded to the Ideal Home Show—a massive exhibition of organizers, designers, cleaners, and productivity experts.
It was a fascinating juxtaposition: inside the classroom, we were learning how to build a business; outside, we experienced others’ businesses fully realized.
I wandered through presentations, taking in the Feng Shui specialists, professional organizers, and even what I can only describe as a mascot vacuum (or “hoover,” as they say in the UK). It didn’t suck, ha!
Marie Kondo’s presentations at the event drew the largest crowds—a testament to the continued resonance of her work.
What Stayed With Me
What I remember most from those days isn’t only the content—it’s the feeling.
Conversations over shared meals stretched long into the evening, filled with ideas, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose. There was an unspoken understanding among us: that this work, at its core, is about helping people live more intentionally, with greater awareness, compassion, and joy.
Docklands, UK, October 2024
On my final night, I returned to my hotel feeling both expansive and grounded.
My mind was alive with ideas. Sleep felt impossible.
So I went for a walk.
I wandered through the Docklands for hours—taking in the lights, the movement, the quiet hum of the city. There was a sense of excitement, yes—but also something deeper:
A renewed sense of purpose.
Putting It Into Practice (Again)
Of course, alongside the inspiration was the reality: To become certified—again—I needed to guide a client through their full tidy festival.
I was stunned to have forgotten that portion of the certification process and the level of commitment it required. I remember laughing aloud wondering if this was similar to how women sometimes forget the intensity of childbirth and remember only the joy.
My friend and host in the UK had mentioned she would love some tidying support, and I decided to offer to guide her through a complete tidy festival for her upcoming milestone birthday. She delightfully agreed, and I was lucky to experience what can only be described as a Travelling Tidy Intensive!
She became my primary practice client for certification—someone I would support through the full KonMari process, from clothing through sentimental items.
Certification, Again
From there, the work expanded.
While I guided my UK host through her full tidy festival—mostly in person and some virtually when I came back to California—I also began supporting a second client partway through their tidy festival, completing their clothing category. Working with multiple “practice clients” is an important part of the certification process that improved my ability to meet clients at different stages of their journey.
Throughout both experiences, I documented my work carefully—capturing notes, reflections, and before-and-after transformations—and submitted detailed reports to the KonMari team. These reports focused not only on outcomes, but on how I supported each client in making decisions and feeling supported through the process.
Once my reports were reviewed and approved, I completed the final certification exam, followed by onboarding and annual membership registration.
In December 2024, I officially became a (re)certified KonMari Consultant.
What going through this process twice taught me is that this work goes far beyond organizing—it’s about learning how to support meaningful, lasting change, and guiding people with care, clarity, and intention as they shape the lives they want to live.
A New Level of Support
One of the most meaningful surprises in returning to KonMari was the level of support now available to consultants.
KonMari consultant memberships now includ:
A Success Coaching Program with monthly 1:1 mentoring sessions for the 1st year, 6 sessions the 2nd year
Ongoing virtual workshops and calls with a global community of caring and committed organizers
A library of training resources
I’m so pleased to be a part of this global network—one that is deeply committed to helping people better understand themselves through the lives they’ve created around them.
Why This Work Matters
Jessica White, KonMari Certificaton Training, 2024
I don’t know how many consultants have gone through the certification process more than once. But I do know this:
Getting re-certified in the KonMari Method® only deepened my belief in the process—and in the life-changing magic of tidying up.
Because this work isn’t just about creating tidy homes.
It’s about creating space—for clarity, for intention, and for a life that truly reflects who you are.
