How a Road Trip Led Me to the KonMari Method
KonMari Consultant Training, San Francisco February 2018
Life has a way of handing us moments that divide everything into before and after. Sometimes those moments are loud and unmistakable. Other times, they’re subtle—like a quiet pulling back of the curtain, revealing a truth that was there all along.
When I first came across Marie Kondo, it was the latter. A seemingly accidental discovery that changed the direction of my life and gave me audacious visions of helping to organize the world.
But I’m getting ahead of myself.
How I Found Marie Kondo
the life-changing magic of tidying up
In 2017, I was on a road trip and in need of something to listen to. I opened my local library’s audiobook app and came across a title that caught my attention: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
I was immediately intrigued.
I started the book on my way to San Francisco and finished it on the drive home. By the time I returned to Santa Barbara, I had a near-singular focus:
Begin my tidy festival.
If you’re not familiar, Marie Kondo is the author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, which has sold over 14 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages. Her method—known as the KonMari Method—centers on joy, gratitude, and intentional living.
Listening to Marie Kondo's words for the first time, I felt something ring true in my body. Her quiet confidence—her conviction that putting your home in order could genuinely change your life—resonated deeply. Her ideas were simple, but profound:
Tidy once, thoroughly and completely (within 6 months to a year)
Tidy by category, not by location
Keep only what sparks joy
Store items vertically, not in piles
I had always loved organizing and creating supportive spaces—for myself and for others—but I had never been able to articulate what drew me to it, or fully consider the ripple effects of tidying once, completely. In that audiobook, I felt I had found the Rosetta Stone I’d long been searching for.
My First Tidy Festival
I got home and immediately got to work, gathering with a giant mound of clothing on my bed. At the time, I was renting a room with roommates and owned considerably more than my space could comfortably hold.
I sorted, purged, and found the process addictively transformative. I told everyone who would listen.
The results went far beyond a tidy closet. For the first time, I could feel—viscerally—what joy felt like in my body. Not just in relation to my belongings, but increasingly in everyday moments and interactions.
The pull of shopping, once a favorite pastime, quietly lost its grip as I sat with the sheer volume of what I had just let go—and how comfortable my space now felt.
At the time, I was working in humanitarian GIS, mapping the movement of medical aid around the world. I began to realize this was a different kind of impact—one that started much closer to home but rippled just as far.
I started to wonder:
Could I help others do this?
A quick Google search later, I discovered that yes—one could become professionally certified—and that Marie Kondo would be coming to California to host a consultant training workshop in a few short months.
After applying, I secured the last available spot for the February 2018 cohort in San Francisco.
The Process of Becoming a KonMari Consultant
I arrived at the workshop feeling almost weightless—like my feet weren’t quite touching the ground.
The venue was spacious and light-filled, with floor-to-ceiling windows, crystal chandeliers, and flowers on every table. People had traveled from around the world, united by a shared desire to bring order, clarity, and care into others’ lives.
The multi-day course began with an overview of what we would be covering—a deep dive into the philosophy behind the KonMari Method, and how to guide clients through their own tidy journeys.
After we settled in, the doors opened—and the energy in the room shifted.
Conversations quieted. People sat up straighter.
In walked Marie Kondo—petite, poised, and almost ethereal.
This was before her Netflix show, before her image was instantly recognizable worldwide. She delivered a keynote through her translator, speaking quietly but powerfully, answering questions with thoughtfulness and care.

The seminar went on to explore joy and gratitude as guiding principles, worked through storage techniques by category, and included a folding practical—yes, even tested with a notorious fitted sheet.

I remember watching fellow attendees hold their breath in quiet concentration as instructors moved through the room, offering gentle guidance and refinement.
Marie Kondo returned for the graduation ceremony to congratulate us, take photos, and sign books. I introduced myself to her husband, Takumi, who was warm and gracious, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to meet them both.
I also formed lasting connections with fellow consultants-in-training—some of whom I’m still in touch with today. We created an accountability group that proved invaluable in helping us reach the next milestone: certification.
Certification
After the training, it was time to put everything into practice.
To become a certified KonMari Consultant, you must:
Guide one client through their complete tidy festival
Support a second client partway through theirs
Throughout the process, I submitted detailed reports, worked with a KonMari evaluator, and ultimately passed a final exam.
Certification granted me the ability to use KonMari trademarks and be listed on KonMari.com as a verified consultant.
From Certification to Practice
I began my first organizing business in 2018, running it alongside a full-time role in humanitarian GIS.
In 2020, I stepped back from both the business and my involvement with KonMari.
But the pull to this work never left.
In 2024, I returned to the KonMari world—this time with deeper experience, clearer intention, and a stronger sense of purpose.
Because in the end, this work isn’t about organizing—
It’s about helping people come home to themselves.
